Don't forget to consider the North in your rush to head south and visit Machu Picchu and Cuzco! Long used to playing second fiddle, the North is nevertheless incredibly rich in terms of archaeological treasures. It is home to an astonishing number of ancient civilisations - all older than the Inca empire - and whose remarkable ruins are fascinating. And Trujillo and Chiclayo are also attractive cities in their own right.
There are ancient ruins everywhere, many of which not yet been explored or classified by archaeologists. The latest addition is the Sacred City of Caral-Supe, near Huaraz, inscribed in June 2009 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. 5,000 years old, it is recognised as the oldest centre of civilization in the Americas.

Sandra, the trip was truly magnificent. I would still say that Macchu Piccu is the most magnificent place I have ever been. The Orient Express Hotels in Lima, Cusco and Macchu Piccu were excellent in every way. The drivers and guides were great! You were terrific and your tour company is one that I will be recommending most highly. Patti
