From the beginning of the Colonial period this series of Inca constructions appears in documents. It was the last refuge of the Inca Imperial Court , which isolated itself in this zone of the southern Andes range as a reaction to the European invasion. Hiram Bingham, who was to discover Machu Picchu for the rest of the world in 1909, initially confused Choquequirao with the sacred city of the Incas.
